If you need to switch high voltage AC circuits using low power DC control signals, solid state triac switches have some major
advantages over mechanical relay technology. Mechanical relays are relatively slow and the contact points have a short life span. Solid state triacs can be switched
much faster than mechanical relays without mechanical contact burn-out.
The K2634 quad triac switch card (kit) keeps the control signals galvanically isolated from the output voltage to
be controlled. Four opto-couplers isolate the input control signals from the four triac outputs. Because the output voltages are controlled by current instead of
voltage, they are less sensitive to input interferences, so that the triac card can be easily mounted near the load and relatively far from the control circuit.
The K2634 triac switch card can be easily connected to any control circuit which can provide a 10ma minimum control
current, or it can also be paired up with other useful cards like the
2-Wire 10 Channel Remote Control K8023, the
8-Channel Keypad K8046, or the
USB Experiment board K8055.
Velleman rates this kit at skill level 2 (intermediate) on a scale of 1 to 5. User assembly and electronic soldering is required.
