40 Pin ZIF Socket Description

ZIF stands for "Zero Insertion Force". A ZIF socket is a prototyping aid and a very handy one at that. ZIF sockets are commonly used on PIC programming devices, for IC testing, or to simplify circuit development anywhere that frequent changing of a DIP (Dual In-line Package) integrated circuit (IC) chip is required.

ZIF socket operation: Move the small spring loaded lever in one direction (up) and the electrical contacts at the top of the ZIF socket open up to allow "drop in" insertion of a DIP IC chip. Then move the lever in the other direction (down) to close the ZIF socket contacts on the IC legs to make temporary electrical connections to all of the legs of the IC. Returning the lever to the former position will re-open the ZIF socket contacts to release the IC from the ZIF socket.

ZIF socket construction: The bottom of the ZIF socket has solid conductive pins (in this case 40 of them) that fit in a standard 40pin, 600mil (width) IC footprint. Press fit the ZIF socket onto prototyping bread board SD24N or prototyping bread board SD35N or solder it onto circuit boards wherever a 40 pin 600mil IC footprint will fit.
Also available: 28 pin ZIF sockets .

This 40 pin ZIF socket will accept insertion of any DIP package IC (up to 40 pins) with a 600mil wide (15.24mm) footprint and a lead pitch of 0.1 inch apart, (100mil lead pitch).
