40 Pin ZIF Socket Description
ZIF stands for "Zero Insertion Force". ZIF sockets are commonly used on PIC programming devices, for IC testing, or to simplify circuit development anywhere that frequent changing of a DIP (Dual In-line Package) integrated circuit (IC) chip is required.
Operation: Move the small spring loaded lever in one direction (up) and the electrical contacts at the top of the socket open to allow "drop in" insertion of a DIP IC chip. Then move the lever (down) to close the socket contacts on the IC legs to make temporary electrical connections to the IC. Returning the lever to the former position will re-open the ZIF socket contacts to release the IC.
Construction: The bottom of the ZIF socket has conductive pins that fit a standard 28 pin, 600mil (width) IC footprint. Press fit the socket onto prototyping bread board SD24N or prototyping bread board SD35N or solder it permanent onto circuit boards.
We also carry 28 pin ZIF sockets.
The contacts on the top of the socket are extra wide. This allows the ZIF socket to accept insertions of all DIP package IC's whether 300mil or 600mil wide*. The pitch of the IC leads must be 0.1 inch apart (100mil lead pitch) to match the pitch of the socket contacts.
