Turn Devices On or Off Using a Cell Phone

Remote control by cell phone electronic kit MK160 monitors the backlight of a cellular phone display with a light detecting resistor (LDR). When the cell phone backlight is turned on by an incoming call, the kit detects this light and activates its on-board relay, which can be used to turn your own external device ON or OFF. The cell phone's backlight needs to remain lit continuously (it should not flash) while the cell phone is ringing.

Some cell phones models may be incompatible, or may require a different backlight setting for incoming calls. If in doubt, check the phone's manual. To operate this kit, a dedicated cell phone and provider subscription or a prepaid phone card is needed. Keep in mind that although there is some protection against unwanted calls, the unit can still be activated by prank callers, wrong numbers dialed, or calls and messages sent from the cellular provider, etc.
The circuit must only be used to operate non-critical equipment. Do not use this circuit to control a life support system or any application where unintended operation might harm people or damage property. User assembly of electronic kit components and soldering is required.
